In 2005, three UK towns joined a race to become "twins" with the Malian city of Timbuktu. The twinning project was set up by the Cultural Mission of Timbuktu, after they discovered that only one out
of three Britons actually believed that Timbuktu existed.
The three shortlisted UK towns were Glastonbury, York and Hay-on-Wye. I loved the idea that these communities were going to have to compete against one another to win Timbuktu's attention. In this project I attempted to create a semi-fictional body of correspondence between the three UK towns and Timbuktu. This included creating several corporate identities, writing false letters/emails/faxes, making postcards/badges etc.
The final outcome became a wirebound A4 document containing a single A4 scan of each item.
